Text: Matthew 5:43-48 – On this first Sunday of the New Year, we close out Chapter 5 in the Sermon in the Mount. Jesus has been showing us examples of how we are to live our a righteousness that exceeds that of the religious leaders. Now, in a summary form, he lays out what our goal should be – Perfection. This is not a perfection that requires sinlessness, but our striving for God’s perfection – a process called sanctification, where we move closer and closer to becoming like Jesus himself. What could be a better New Year’s resolutions than committing ourselves to be striving to be more and more like our Saviour Jesus this year.
