Text: Matthew 5:21-26 – This is the first of six statements Jesus makes providing examples of what he meant when he taught that our righteousness needs to exceed that of the religious leaders. In this first statement, Jesus teaches that the command not to murder goes beyond the act of taking a life. It looks the actions and attitudes that can lead to a murderous heart, namely anger, contempt, and character attacks. Our righteous is not based on simple obedience to the letter of the law. God looks at the motives of our heart.
