Is Your Righteousness Good Enough?

Text: Matthew 5:17-20 – After teaching his audience that he did not come to earth to abolish the law, but to be its fulfillment, Jesus challenges his listeners that if they truly want to be faithful followers, their righteous actions needed to go above and beyond what they saw the religious leaders doing. The message is that it is not about the specific actions that make a person righteous but the attitude of their heart. The scribes and Pharisees did their righteous acts for show to make themselves look more “spiritual.” God wants our obedience to be motivated by love for him, a desire for holiness, and to bring glory to his name, not ourselves.
